He would have succeeded if not for her last line of defense: Prince Lysander. Humans have vanished under the rubble of their world and if the queen has her way, elves will be next.Įroan, one of the last elven assassins, lives for one purpose: kill the queen. My work on intelligence and brain size led me to consider the problem that women have smaller brains than men even when allowance is made for their smaller bodies. I have also published several papers showing that intelligence is associated with brain size and reaction times. In 1989 I proposed that the increases in intelligence have been caused by improvements in nutrition. In 1983 I published a paper in Nature showing that the IQ in Japan had increased over the course of the previous half century, a phenomenon now known as the Flynn Effect following the demonstration by Jim Flynn of secular increases in intelligence in number of countries. In subsequent years the high Oriental IQ has been confirmed in numerous studies of Oriental peoples in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Singapore and the United States. I first published the high IQ of the Oriental peoples in 1977 in a paper on the intelligence of the Japanese. My major discoveries are that the Oriental peoples of East Asia have higher average intelligence by about 5 IQs points than Europeans and peoples of European origin in the United States and elsewhere and that men have a higher average IQ than women by about 5 IQs points. Most of my work has been on intelligence. at the University of Cambridge and have worked as lecturer in psychology at the University of Exeter, professor of psychology at the Economic and Social Research Institute, Dublin, and at the University of Ulster. I graduated in psychology and took my Ph.D. In 1974, Pears singled out Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo as one of the greatest works Britten had given him. XXIV: " Spirto ben nato, in cui si specchia e vede" ("Noble spirit, in whom is reflected"). XXXII: " S'un casto amor, s'una pietà superna" ("If there is a chaste love, a heavenly pity").XXXVIII: " Rendete agli occhi miei, o fonte o fiume" ("Give back to my eyes, o fountains and rivers").LV: " Tu sa, ch'io so, signor mie, che tu sai" ("You know that I know, my lord, that you know").XXX: " Veggio co' bei vostri occhi un dolce lume" ("I see through your lovely eyes a sweet light").XXXI: " A che più debb'io mai l'intensa voglia" ("To what purpose do I express my intense desire").XVI: " Si come nella penna e nell'inchiostro" ("Just as in pen and ink").: 158 It consists of settings of seven sonnets, all love songs, by the Italian painter and poet Michelangelo (1475–1564), in the original language: Michelangelo was at her bedside when she died he wrote that on her death Nature, that never made so fair a face, / Remained ashamed, and tears were in all. The manuscripts of the songs are dated between April and October 1940 but there is some evidence that the cycle had been contemplated, and even begun, as early as 1937. It was written for himself and his love and life-partner, the tenor Peter Pears (1910–86). Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo is a song cycle composed by Benjamin Britten (1913–76) for tenor voice and piano in 1940, and published as his Op. She’s just a great fucking kid.Īfter we order, talk turns to our latest cases, the goings-on at the firm. If sunshine took human form, like some Greek myth, she would be Presley Shaw. She lives back in Mississippi with her mother, Stanton’s ex, but she comes to DC often enough that my friend has more than earned his Daddy moniker. Stanton’s daughter, Presley, is the sole exception. Cool, sweet baggage, sure, but baggage all the same. He’s a heavy hitter around the firm-his record is as impressive as my own-and he’s got his eye on a partnership. We met in law school and became roommates shortly after that. Originally a Mississippi farm boy, he’s honest, loyal, has a low tolerance for bullshit, and exudes an easy, genuine charm that women find irresistible-as do juries. Stanton Shaw is a good old boy-in every sense of the term. “Her ass is off-limits,” Stanton replies, scanning the menu. “My ass is always available for you, Mason.” Stanton pulls out Sofia’s chair for her, then sits in his own. “Hi.”īrent leans back in his chair, his dark blue gaze glinting with mischief. He kisses her with smiling lips and a sappy expression. Sofia stands up when he approaches, smoothing down her sleek black skirt, her four-inch heels lifting her to eye level with her boyfriend. It is so comforting to see other family members from previous books. The stories are somewhat typical and almost realistic romance but with the humor and caring, they are far better than most in this genre. The characters feel like family and friends. The family and small town dynamics are great. The titles are all Beatles songs because Gramps, Elmer, loves the Beatles. This family of TEN children set in a small Vermont mountain town is warm, funny, and sexy. It captured me with the first book, ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE , when I fell in love with Will and has never let me go. But Megan has watched too many people she loves leave her. With her sister-and her job at the diner-going away, Megan finds herself leaning on the sexy, button-down accountant who isn’t afraid to lay it all on the line for her. Megan’s sister rocks her with the news that she and her husband are moving overseas, leaving Megan truly alone. Instead, Hunter is prepared to do whatever it takes to show Megan that he’s the man for her. But the one thing he can’t fix is his undeniable attraction to Megan Kane. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Īs the oldest of the ten Abbott siblings, Hunter prides himself on his ability to solve other people’s problems, but now he has a problem of his own-how to convince the woman of his dreams that his love is for keeps.Īs the chief financial officer, Hunter Abbott manages the family’s various business interests while “fixing” things for the people he loves. I love the little call out to female gamers like myself as well and shows that this book covers everything in ID's history. The two John's, Carmack and Romero, are great characters and their story really comes alive with a Wil Wheaton's narration. Hello 'Masters of Doom'! With Quake and Quake II being a massive part of my life not only selling it as my job at the time but also playing Death Match with my Team Fortress clan until the wee small hours of the morning this book brought back so many great memories as well as delivering such a great insight to how ID came into being and end up making legendary ground breaking games. After finishing 'Ready Player One' also read by Wil Wheaton I was on a bit of a downer thinking that I would not find a book as amazing as that and everything else would fail in comparison. Lesbian separatism became popular in the 1970s as some lesbians doubted whether mainstream society or even the LGBT movement had anything to offer them. Many lesbian separatists bought land so they could live separately from men and heterosexual women. Separatism has been considered by lesbians as both a temporary strategy and as a lifelong practice. Lesbian separatism is a form of separatist feminism specific to lesbians. In No More Fun and Games, the organization's radical feminist periodical, Cell Members Roxanne Dunbar and Lisa Leghorn advised women to "separate from men who are not consciously working for female liberation", but advised periods of celibacy, rather than lesbian relationships, which they considered to be "nothing more than a personal solution". Cultural historian Alice Echols cites Cell 16 as an example of feminist heterosexual separatism, as the group never advocated lesbianism as a political strategy, instead promoting the idea of celibacy or periods of celibacy in heterosexual relationships.Įchols credits Cell 16's work for "helping establishing the theoretical foundation for lesbian separatism". Founded in 1968 by Roxanne Dunbar, Cell 16 has been cited as the first organization to advance the concept of separatist feminism. One of the earliest, and best known examples of heterosexual separatist feminism was Cell 16.
